I read Mari’s postcard again. She was one of the sweetest people I knew. I bet even Simone couldn’t be mean to her. On Monday I was starting Operation Kindness.

At recess, I invited Simone and Lena to go rock hunting with me.

“We can find rocks for our project,” I said.

Simone couldn’t argue with that . . . I hoped.

“Great idea,” Lena said.

“Okay,” Simone said reluctantly.

I took them to some of the top spots Mari and I explored: by the swings, around the big shady tree whose branches looked like leafy arms, in the gravel near the basketball hoop, on the hill that led to the fence. At first, we didn’t discover anything exciting. Then I poked around and pulled out a rock that looked different from what I usually find. As I wiped it off we could see it was special. Cloudy in spots and clear in others, it looked like quartz.
